Day-by-day itinerary
Day 01 — Paro to Phobjikha & camp on the valley floor Drive from Paro across the Dochula Pass and down into the glacial bowl of Phobjikha, arriving in time for the light to go gold across the valley walls. The camp is pitched in a pine clearing a short walk above the Chari river, with proper beds, hot water bottles and a fire lit before dark.
Day 02 — Crane country & the valley floor Dawn on the valley floor looking for black-necked cranes on the marshes, then a slow walk through the meadow and the wintering wetlands with a naturalist. The afternoon returns to camp for tea, and the evening is the best stargazing in Bhutan — no light pollution for forty kilometres in any directi…
Day 03 — Up to the Laya ridge Climb from the valley floor to the Laya ridge at 3,250 metres, an easy four hours through pine that opens onto the high grazing meadows used by the Laya herders. The camp is moved ahead of you, so the afternoon is spent entirely in the camp with the whole northern range in front of you.
Day 04 — Gangtey and the green belt Descend to Gangtey for a day outside the camp, cycling or walking the green belt where the road disappears into pine and the only sounds are the river and the wind. Lunch at a farm kitchen, then a final evening back at camp with a fire and a clear sky.
Day 05 — Strike camp & return to Paro Breakfast in camp, then a walk back down to the vehicle and the drive up over the Dochula to Paro. The afternoon is free to rest before the flight home, with luggage forwarded ahead so nobody has to think about a bag all day.
