Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 01 — Paro arrival and the first look at the bloom Land in Paro and meet the photographer-guide, who walks you straight into the valley to see what the season is actually doing that week — a walk to the first flowering trees before anything else is planned. Evening is a technical session, lenses, light and a shooting plan for the days ahead.
  2. Day 02 — The Dcensibri trail at first light An early start for the Dcensibri trail, the classic Paro walk through pine and birch where the rhododendron opens earliest, in the hour when the valley is still full of mist and the light is low and sideways. The guide works the light with you rather than following a route, and the afternoon is spe…
  3. Day 03 — Orchards, villages and the quiet Paro valley A full day on the valley floor, shooting the apple orchards and the villages between them in the spring light, with a long lunch in a farmhouse and the afternoon given to the dzong and the ancient bridge. The most unremarkable-looking day of the trip and the one that produces the most keepers.
  4. Day 04 — Thimphu: market, dzong and the craft quarter Drive up to the capital for a day of street photography — the weekend market, the weavers, the paper mill and the walk around the dzong — with a break in the middle of the day that is not spent shooting. Evening is a short edit and an early night for the morning after.
  5. Day 05 — Dochula to Punakha, and the orchards in spring Cross the Dochula Pass with Gangkar Puensum on a clear morning, then descend the switchbacks into Punakha for the afternoon, where the jacarandas along the river and the blossom in the orchards below town are the season's other subject. Evening on the Punakha terrace with the day's work projected o…
  6. Day 06 — Punakha Dzong, Rigu Gompa and the sunset shoot A slow morning in Punakha Dzong and a walk up to Rigu Gompa, which is the best viewpoint in the valley and the best hour of the day to be standing in it. The afternoon is free, and the evening is a long sunset session on the riverbank with the guide and a long lens.
  7. Day 07 — Taktsang in the morning light, back to Paro An early start for the Tiger's Nest, timed for the point in the morning when the monastery is lit from below and the valley below it is still full of cloud, which is the photograph everyone wants and almost nobody gets. Breakfast at the viewpoint, then the drive back to Paro for the last night.
  8. Day 08 — The edit, and the flight home A morning spent in the lodge going through the trip's images properly, with the guide building a curated set of forty frames that are edited and delivered to you before you leave — not a folder of six hundred similar ones. Afternoon flight, and the set arrives as a link in the air.
